Title : Of French Spiderman & Malaysian Cicakman, or, La France Peut, Monsieur!
Life seems to revolve around titles. We already have more than we need. From Dato' (or Datuk or Datok) to Tan Sri and Tun. Having a title appears to suggest the individual's high net worth. Whilst having the latest BMW 635iCSL would certainly help to an extent; it seems that in order to get a celebrity wife (preferably a singer, model, actress or at least an Akademi Fantasia Student), you have to be Dato' A, Dato' B or Dato' C. For lesser mortals, but professionals nonetheless, you can have a Dr. or an Ar. as prefixes; but only if you happen to be a Doctor or an Architect. Others are bound to follow suit and true enough, the Surveyors couldn't resist the temptation; recently jumping into the bandwagon and declared that the names of their senior members will be prefixed with an Sr.

Title: Of Teh Tarik, Roti Canai & Chapati, or, Spin Again, Earthling…!!
Let’s imagine a scenario of unrivalled serenity and tranquility; a forty-something man lazing on a vast sand dune, deeply engrossed in a book that seems to effortlessly hover in front of him. His wife, wearing a full coloured batik pario performs a seemingly impossible balancing act; but nevertheless succeeds every time in doing her Teh Tarik stunt. His in-laws were watching the kids who took their turns spinning tops; now and then calling out loud; forbidding them from playing with the aliens.

We live in interesting times. If our ancestors only had their Wayang Tongkols (nickname for the Chinese Soap Opera) to while away their pre-LLN (Lembaga Letrik Negara, now TNB) nights, we are blessed with the age of satellite and plasma TV. And to add spice to that, we are daily fed with juicy news and juicier programmes. This week, for example, has been The Tearful `Ex’ Week. Some tears were shed as Brazil became an ex-World Cup contender. More tears flowed when Salima became an ex-AF 4 student. And when Erra became Yusri’s ex-wife. Or when Nordiana became Mawi’s ex-fiance. We also anticipate some crocodile tears to drop somewhere along the exciting face-off between the PM and the ex-PM.

Title: Of Papers, Doors & Signboards, or, Here’s A Courteous Welcome To The Rudest City, Sir!
I have this habit of reading signboards, wherever they might be. One that amused me this morning was a placard placed on a toll booth of an ultra modern superhighway linking Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. Placed underneath the name of the toll booth operator, it says: “Please report if I do not (1) Smile (2) Give greetings (3) Say Thank You”.

Title: Of The Holy Grail & Knights Templar, or, Templer Park & The Last Biskut Lutut
I recently met a long lost friend of mine. Before long, we found ourselves sipping expensive mocha and occasionally munching RM1 per piece cookies in one of the more trendy boutique cafes in downtown KL. The last time we met was some twenty-five years ago, and life seems to have been kind to him since. He now co-owns a company supplying diesel nationwide, is married with four kids, stays in a posh residential area in Ampang and drives an Alpina B10. To many, he seems to be living the ultimate Malaysian Dream, if ever there is one. And that too considering the fact that the last time we met, we were sharing some humble `Biskut Lutut’ (Knee Biscuits, because of its shape) dipped in home brewed coffee in a sleepy hollow that was Teluk Anson. He must be one very happy guy now. I casually threw that remark at him, and he quickly shook his head.

Title: Of Gunnysacks & Sempoa, or, Geishas That Speak English
It’s hard to be a parent nowadays, you hear people sigh now and then. Once in a while, yours truly included. That, coupled with the ubiquitous work, traffic jams, baby sitters, school vans that didn’t come, bills, fees, tolls and what have you haunting your days and nights like Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam. But then, since when has parenting been easy? Had it been any easier then; or rather, should it be any easier now? Or then again, perhaps it should actually be the other way round; it’s now hard to be a child.
