NJ Ryan the Headmaster, WanMohdMahyiddin the Senior Union Secretary and David Marshall, first Chief Minister of Singapore (1954 and resigned 1956), who gave a talk on 'Malaysia and Confrontation' in the Hargreaves Hall, some time in February 1963.
David Marshall, an Iraqi Jew, had come to Kuala Kangsar for a court case, as defence counsel for someone charged with corruption. He was persuaded by Ryan to talk to Kolet on the subject.
'Malaysia' was scheduled to be established on 31st August 1963 was subsequently delayed owing to protests by Indonesia and the Philippines.
Indonesia had declared confrontation against Malaya in January, 1963. Being then in the Opposition in Singapore, David Marshall's views had been ambivalent on 'Malaysia'. That was the first and only occassion that
David Marshall talked on 'Malaysia' outside of Singapore.
David Marshall has a 'Datoship' from Pahang just as LeeKuanYew has one from Johore but being Singaporeans neither used the titles even in Malaysia.
