THE WINDS OF CHANGE : MCKK 70's -: The Experimental Years

Changes in education policy was the highlight in the seventies. Fresh from the racial riots of 1969, a new policy was intoduced by an Old Boy, now largely known as the New Economic Policy (NEP) was introduced and thus, the policies pertaining to education were revamped and MCKK was in the full brunt of the winds of change. Post hippies days, The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Hawaii Five-O and Mission Impossible, really summed up MCKK in the seventies. That 70's show, yes ... famous TV shows of the seventies; A huge family with talents, one big happy family with all its family tribulations, high drama adventures of love-hate relationships, surviving with the barest necessities, turning the impossible to possible in the face of new challenges, and its own Watergate Scandal. Yes, water was a problem in MCKK. The end of the Vietnam War, start of the Arab-Israeli War. Peace with honour. War with dispute. Honours with peace. Food for thought and thinking of foods, ... KK’s Kueh tiaw, kueh pau, ‘bistik’, A&W, ‘laksa’, bom, ‘ayor plastik’, Makcik Kantin. Wear and tear... Bell bottoms and halter tops. Of Levi’s, Lees and Wranglers. Platform shoes and paisley shirts. Outrageous clothing. Seeing stars on screens. Ethnic movies in cinema: Bruce Lee, Wang Yu & Alexander Foo Sheng... with Sangam, Bobby and Haathi Mere Saathi. Music to soothe the soul.... Acid rock and hard rock music took hold in the 70’s.Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Santana.. Disco fever...’How deep is your love’, Bee Gees,... Gee wheez... D’Lloyd,Carefree, Black Dog Bone, Alleycats. Afro-look,.. Piala Perdana Menteri debates.. Master debater. Talk more,think less. Words mattered less, sometimes not at all. Running on empty. The 70’s gave us ‘The Godfather’, ‘Dirty Harry’, ‘Death Wish’... and ‘Deep Throat’. Death, blood and guts, and sex... was right out there, for all to see.Nothing was left to the imagination. Discretion was not the better part of valor; there was no discretion... and precious little valour. Student power and blackouts. Sports was King... Hockey World Cup Kuala Lumpur 1975....Super Mokh, Spider Arumugam, Towkay and ‘Kaiser” Franz Beckenbaur. Gerd Muller, playing pool in Pertama Complex, loafing in Ampang Park complex, Mini-uses. ... running on plenty. The king Elvis Presley, died. Therock and roll died with him.. so did one MCKK Old Boy and PM Tun Abdul Razak. The King is dead and the PM is dead. Change of leadership, tune, change in policies in country and in MCKK. Change of principals, changing of principles, styles, values and traditions. A decade of contradictions and sequential progressions. From class to brain elitism leading to brain drain. A beginning of an end to an era... The Seventies... of enthusiasm without nourishment withers...
